(CBS 42) AUSTIN The city wants to move the animal shelter on Town Lake to East Austin. The area is near Airport Boulevard and Highway 183.

But one local group says the location needs to be used for affordable housing.

People Organized in Defense of Earth and her Resources (PODER) says there is a need for more affordable homes.

"We have 8,000 people on a waiting list for public and Section 8 housing,” Susana Almanza with PODER said. “We have 5,000 homeless children attending the Austin Independent School District. Yet we can't build homes."

In November, Austin voters approved the construction of a new animal shelter.

Town Lake Animal Center is at least 50 years old. The city says the center is prone to flooding.
